Eugene "Gene" Karol
Eugene "Gene" Karol was an at-large member of the Calvert County Board of Education in Maryland. He first won election to the board in 2006. Karol advanced from a primary election on June 24, 2014, to face three other candidates in a general election on November 4, 2014. Eugene "Gene" Karol lost the general election on November 4, 2014.
Biography
Karol earned his B.S. from the University of Maryland-College Park and his M.Ed. from Western Maryland College. He also holds an Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University. Karol served as the superintendent of Somerset County Public Schools for six years and Calvert County Public Schools for 13 years. At the time of his tenure, Karol was working as an associate professor for the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, where he has taught since 2002.[1]

The June 24, 2014, primary ballot included incumbents Dawn C. Balinski and Eugene "Gene" Karol as well as challengers Pamela L. Cousins, William J. "Bill" Phalen and Billy Saunders. Balinski, Karol, Cousins and Phalen faced off in the general election on November 4, 2014.
Cousins and Phalen defeated the incumbents in the general election.

Funding
Karol reported $4,000.00 in contributions and $1,229.00 in expenditures to the Maryland State Board of Elections, leaving his campaign with $2,771.00 on hand as of August 19, 2014. His entire funds at that time came from a single self-donation.[2]
Endorsements
Karol received the endorsement of the Education Association of Calvert County prior to the primary election.[3]
